Acting Out Theater Program Acting Out is local teen theater program which builds self esteem in the teen participants, to increase positive communications skills and positive resolutions to confrontations with peers, adults, and parents; to reduce youth involvement in violent incidents in the community and school; and to involve parents with these solutions. Acting Out provides a "safe haven" for teens allowing them to discuss issues that affect their lives, and work through those issues using theater.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Harrisonburg & Rockingham Co. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County provides one-on-one mentoring to children between the ages of 6 and 14. Children matched in the program come primarily from single-parent homes and are in need of extra guidance and support from a responsible adult. Children are paired with carefully screened adult volunteers (18 or older) and spend several hours a week with their match, either in the community or school setting, for a minimum of 1 year. There are no socioeconomic factors or fees that prevent families from benefiting from services. Our services are offered free of charge to any child living in the Harrisonburg or Rockingham area. Parental consent and cooperation, however, is very important. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to helping build strong, emotionally healthy children who will grow up to be responsible, caring adults.

Families complete an enrollment form outlining their specific child care needs. Customized child care referrals are generated within two business days.

Little Treasures Child Care Center Little Treasures Child Care Center provides services to children ranging in ages from 6 weeks to 5 years. The Center provides breakfast, lunch and two snacks a day for children ages 16 months and older. For children under 16 months of age, parents must provide diapers, wipes, food and formula. Center staff have been screened for criminal history, and child abuse checks. Staff is certified in CPR and First Aid. Children at the Center are divided according to age for various activities including indoor/outdoor play, arts and crafts, circle time, and lots of play time. Plains Area DayCare Center Plains Area DayCare Center provides a safe, deveopmental program that seeks to challenge each child to grow socially, emoitionally, physically, and intellectually through well-planned age-appropriate activites. Childcare is provided in the Northern Rockingham County Area on a sliding scale. The center is sponsored by the United Way. We accept children starting at age 2-1/2 through 5 years at the Preschool Center. Plains DayCare also offers a Before and After School Program, serving ages 5-12 years of age. The center requires current immunizations, a current physical and proof of income for eadch family. There is a $15.00 per child registration fee and the tuition range is from $42.00/week to $72.00/week. This scale is based on family size and income. View

Roberta Webb Child Care Center, Inc Roberta Webb child care provides quality, affordable, licensed child care in a safe and nurturing environment. The Webb Center serves children ages 2-5 in the Harrisonburg area. The program is geared toward parents that balance work and/or school with parenting (often with little support). A special focus is providing child cre for families in the Northeast neighborhood of Harrisonburg, where the center is located. Children are exposed to a variety of early learning experiences designed to meet the needs of the whole child. Nutritious meals and snacks are served. Sliding scale fees are based on family income in order to be affordable to all families. The Webb Center also provides additional support to parents in a variety of ways. Parent nights provide a forum for parents of all backgrounds to meet each other, watch video segments of their childs classroom, and talk about prenting sissues. Free parenting classes (with childcare), provide extra support to parents. View

Rockingham 4-H Program 4-H is a youth development organization for youth ages 5-19. 4-H is open to all youth without discriminiation of any type. There is no fee to join 4-H. 4-H is a program conducted through Virginia Cooperative Extension. Virginia Cooperative Extension is supported by our two land grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. These universities provide 4-H with research based non-biased information.

4-H youth have the opportunity to explore various projects of interest with over 200 projets in 46 subject areas. 4-H is aimed at developing life skills of the youth participating. 4-H develops, understanding of self, communication, leadership and citizenship skills, as well as problem solving and decision making skills. There are over 20 community clubs available in Rockingham County.

Special Olympics Northwest Office Special Olympics is a sports training and competition program for persons with mental retardation of a closely related developmental disability. Participants must be at least eight years old and all participants must have a physical exam completed by a doctor (MD or DO) or a Nurse Practitioner. A parental release form is also required. Athletes select the sport(s) of their choice from a list of 23 available sports. Training is held weekly and the season includes multiple opportunities for competitive experiences. View
